No Baytril or Nuflor

I have to sweep the cob webs out. I haven't done bottle feeders since I was a kid, some time back. I had Gramps to help with anything. My daughter has a deal going with a local Jersey dairy for 5 bottle bulls. She is looking at me like I looked to Gramps, only I don't have Gramps anymore and I don't have anywhere near his knowledge or experience.

I called some vets about Nuflor and Baytril. No go, each and every dose has to be given on site by the vet. At $8.50 per cc, $78 service call and $2.85 per mile round trip, that isn't gonna happen. That is for the cheaper Baytril. Nuflor was $9.75 per cc.

So is there anything that is as good or close that can be found or had online? Can La 200 be used in conjunction with penicillin to get a better more broad range fix?

Daughter and me have been reading for days and seem to now be over loaded. We have the La200, good milk based replacer that the dairy uses after a few days when the colostrum is in, electrolytes, scours tabs if the 200 doesn't do the trick, we have some other misc things around to be as prepared as possible too. Does any one recommend we have anything else on hand? I miss Gramps he always seemed to have everything under control and always new what to do.

Thanks for anything you have.

Welcome to the forum Owls.
1. Why not two calves for starters.
2. $8.50 per ml is unreasonable, I buy it at $1.00 per ml thru Vet, keep shopping.
3. If your buying from a local dairy the odds are you will never need a Baytril type product. I've bought at least 15 calves from the dairies and never needed meds. I've also bought handfuls of calves from auctions and always needed meds. Rarely did any die thanks to having powerful meds. on hand.
4. Where do you live I have plenty of Baytril.
5. If your calves are sick nothing like La200 or alike is powerful enough to cure major sicknesses.

My advice is buy two calves, don't overfeed, do as the dairyman instructs and I'd feel confident that all will be well. Buy two more after the first two reach one month old....Topside

Are you just trying to decide what to stock up on before getting the calves? We keep penicillin, scours tablets, LA 200 and Corid on hand, different medications for different problems.

First of all LA200 has just a few uses. Pink eye and hoof root are about the 2 only good uses for it now days. Penicillin is even better then the LA200. The use of penicillin and SustainIII tablets(sulfa drug) or SMZ tablets/Bactrum will take care of most of the small problems. If all else fails see if a vet will sign a priscpirtion for them meds you need to buy them mail order.
Also where are you located? Maybe someone on here can direct you to a good vet or help you out.

We are in Oregon Between I-5 and Lincoln City. Five are set up right now. We are going to keep 2 and a neighbor is going to buy the other 3 calves from my daughter when they are weaned and ready. I like the idea of starting with 2 and going from there.

I can't for the life of me find a vet that will sign up for us to buy mail order, everyone of them says the state calls for the vet to administer each dose by the vet on site here or at there shop.

We will get some Penicillin, more vitamin things and some sulfa drugs. With out the use of the 2 we can't get I was just wondering what would be good to have on hand. I know our hands will be tied on some illness but others have to have different treatments that can be used if Baytril and Nuflor type meds cannot be had.

This is a great place. Daughter has been reading and showing me things for days. She likes that you can read about stuff here and people don't get ripped apart for their thoughts and ideas.

Thanks folks

I'm with Topside. $8.50 is unreasonable for the cost of baytril. I recommend you continue shopping until you're able to secure 3-5cc's per calf. I realize you have to get it from a vet. But, some will allow you to purchase it from them to keep it on hand.
