Question about bottle jaw

When the vet was out he told me to put my cow on Kaopectate. 60 cc twice a day for a week. Things started to look good. By Saturday she no longer had a bottle jaw or a tail mustache (her loose stools was almost gone).

(bit of background
Sad news)

So I stopped yesterday.

This morning she had loose stools but not real bad but by this afternoon her bottle jaw is back bigger then before!
I did up her feed and beet pulp this morning but not more then total of what she would have gotten for the day with her evening feeding. which she ate. and gave her a few alfalfa cubes in her bucket but she didn’t eat those. she has been snubbing them for weeks So we stopped giving them to her a week ago.
Could a bottle jaw be brought on by allergic reaction to alfalfa?

The only other thing different was that I didn’t take her out to graze (she is dry lot) for her hour in the morning and evening yesterday. Something we started this last week too. because I wasn’t feeling well myself.
So she ate from her roll of hay.
Could there be something in the hay?

The vet just called back and said that bottle jaw can come back. and told me to put her back on the Kaopectate.
So back on it she goes. As well as some electrolyte powder in her soaked pulp.

update.
her stools have been back to normal for almost 2 weeks now. her bottle jaw comes and goes.
She seems to be putting on some weight and other then being on the thin side you would never know there was anything wrong.

Interesting. In sheep bottle jaw is from a heavy worm load. Not everything from one applies to the other of course. Thanks for the updates!!

If you read the fenbendasole (Safeguard) instructions you can double the dose for tapes and feed the crumbles over several days. I wonder if a more concentrated and prolonged treatment would work better rather than the standard hit em and them hit em again in 2 weeks.

Tailwagging where do you buy that much Kaopectate? I keep it here for the goats if needed but I get it at the drug store and always use the generic brand. If I had to give that much I would have to get it by the case.

You can get the livestock stuff by the gallon. They mainly sell it for calves.

I buy the pink stuff like pepto but for livestock by the gallon from my local farm supply.

BTW, what is "bottle jaw"? Haven't heard of that one and have been raising calves for a while now.
