Sad news
I finally got the large animal vet to come out to see my one cow (it took over a month and a half to get him to come ) She had been loosing weight and even after 2 dewormings with ivomec and then another two dewormings with fenbendazole and a treatment of corid ( as directed by the vet over the phone), she continued to loose. Then developed scours and a bottle jaw so then he HAD to come out in case it was a case of johne's.
well, she has a foot ball size internal tumor and has only months at best.
So now it comes down to just keeping her happy.
Interesting note the bottle jaw seems to be going down. but the runs are still going even though she is getting pepto.

Are you going to end her suffering or just let nature take its course? Sorry to hear the bad news.

Sorry about your cow, I`m with rancher1913 why on Gods green earth would they not come out? We don`t use the Vet much but if we call with a problem, they come out as soon as they can. And a regular day, just make an appointment, few days is all it takes most times. >Thanks Marc

There is only one who will see cattle here and he would rather use his time on a dairy or multiple cattle call. At first I thought he was being nice, giving me free advice and maybe he was, not knowing that I really meant what I said.
Right now she is eating pretty good, coat still soft and shinny, not weak, stretching when she gets up, trotting around for the greener parts and caring for her calf. I just can't get the weight back on her and the runs stopped.
When I feel that she is having more bad days then good we will put her down.

This is sad. I hope she doesn't suffer much.
A month and a half is way too long. I don't think I could be that patient.

It was like this.
I called and asked to make an appointment. he asked if I had dewormed.
I was going to since it is that time of year. So he told me to go ahead and deworm her then wait two weeks do it again, wait two weeks then call him back. I asked which dewormer would he like me to use. Ivomec pour on was his choice. ok did it, still thin.
Called back, lets try Fenbendazole, same timing. two weeks deworm again, wait two weeks. Still thin.
Called back. he says maybe it is coccidiosis. treat with corid for 5 days then wait a week.
THEN she started the runs and as soon as she got a bottle jaw he came out.
So maybe he was trying to save me the cost of a trip or maybe he didn't want to come out for just one cow. who knows.
either way it would have turned out the same.
Right now she is still sunning, chewing her cud, stretching and trotting. So, so far she is still living with some cow happiness.

The most valuable thing you can have is a good relationship with a good cow vet.

I have cut back on the protein supplements (calf manna) I was feeding her and her bottle jaw is gone and her stools seem to be coming around right. I maybe just hoping but to me she seems to be putting on a tad bit of weight.

I am sorry for the bad news and hope that you and your cow have some good times. Summer can be wonderful!
Is her calf weaned? How old is the calf?

Sorry to hear this Tailwagging. If I may ask how did the vet determine there was a foot ball size internal tumor?

Her calf is 4 months and is still nursing. I thought about trying to wean her but I also didn't wait to stress the cow by removing her calf.
