Price for dairy heifer

What do you all think is a reasonable price for a bred yearling dairy heifer?

What breed? Jersey here is $1000 Crossbreed less. If think the $1000 is reasonable since they are hard to come by.

I sure hope she is short bred, I never breed yearlings. I prefer them be two when they calve. As I said on the other thread, 1200 for a bred heifer is what we get, but ours are registered. > Thanks Marc

It really just depends on your area. How many of these are available near you? Can you look at a sale barn listing and see what they might be going for there? Call your extension cattle person and ask. A lot also depends on how much you want her too.

Area as a great deal to do with it, for sure. Around here, Jersey heifers were rare and those I found were ugly, sickly and still on the bottle. . .none with papers.
So, I was HAPPY to drive 3 hours and get a weaned, healthy, papered & pretty as a picture Jersey heifer for a grand! lol

We bought a 10 month old Jersey/Holstein heifer for $650.00. She came with a free breeding to a dairy bull. We bred her at 15 months, she had a beautiful bull calf, and is now milking 7 gallons a day on grass and a few handfuls of Alfalfa cubes. We think she was a good investment.
