Just wanted to share this pic of my girls!
They're grazing on their tiny bit of pasture. You can tell how much they're enjoying it, can't you?

I was feeding some excellent 2nd and 3rd cutting hay over the winter, and yeah, they got a bit pudgy! I didn't really notice it until I was looking at some pictures, and realized Bitey's belly hangs lower than her hocks. Oops!
But they're retired now -- I'm not breeding or milking them anymore; in fact, they've been dry for years, so I'm not too worried about metabolic problems.
They're on first-cutting hay now, so they'll probably slim down a bit over the summer. And if they don't ... hmm, do they make Jenny Craig for cows?!

Some solid girls....pasture exercise is better than Jenny Craig. They'll be fine on pasture are they bred?

No, they're retired now ... just living out their lives as (very spoiled) pets.
How can you look at a face like that and not want to give her another bucket of sweet feed? LOL

Practically none, unfortunately! I have only 4 acres here, and most of it is woods. There is a 50x100 ft. patch of lawn in front of the trailer which I've fenced in. I let them graze it for a few hours about once a week -- otherwise, they'd stomp it into mud, like the rest of their paddocks. So mostly they get hay, and a bagged cattle ration, plus treats (crusts of bread and bananas being their favorites).
They're always alert to the possibility of treats ...

I think it's great that they have a 'retirement' home with you!
Especially with the rising cost of hay etc.

Well it makes me smile to see them.
I sure wish I could afford to adopt and keep
a few of my favorite ladies from the barn. (one in particular,sigh).
That is simply not an option here.
& it is not 'practical' anyhow.
I love it that you can be impractical in that way. 
They are clearly very dear to you.

I work 2 jobs to keep them, but it's worth it to me.

I really enjoy my cows also, but I can`t keep them all either, we try and find good homes for the nice ole girls, and the rest well? Willow , looks like if I come back in the next life I should be one of your cows. They sure look like they are well cared for, How old are they? > Thanks Marc

LOL, I was just telling my husband the other day that I want to come back as one of my cows! We were slaving away in the sun, putting my new greenhouse together, while the cows were lying around chewing their cud, watching us.
In answer to your question, Christine (the white cow) was born in February 2002; Twister, the black cow, was born in 1997, and Bitey, the one with her head up in the first pic, is about 12 -- she was a fifth-lactation cow when I bought her in 2005. I also have Christine's half-Angus daughter, Lillian, who turned 3 in April.
I'm hoping my girls will be with me for many more years!
