Calf Arrived Today (w/ photos!!)

Hello All,

Our first calf arrived today.

Mama Cow did very well on her own. At about 9:00AM I noticed the sack out and she delivered at 10:05AM.

New calf was on it's feet with about 20 minutes and starting nursing within an hour. The calf is still pretty clumsy at nursing - and only seems to latch on for a short amount of time, but seems strong and active.

Here are a few photos from just after birth.

Within 5 minutes the calf's head was up while Mama was cleaning.

Not long after the calf made it to all fours.

Here the calf is figuring out nursing.

Here's Mama and Calf hanging out - Mama still cleaning. (I pointed out to our 4 year old son that all Mama's are insistent on their babies being clean, which is why Mama makes him wash behind his ears during a bath!!!)

Thanks to everyone in this forum for your great information and insight. We really didn't do much but watch - but seeing everything go just as described made for a much less stressful birthing for those of us watching.

She is a very nice looking cow. I think you made the right choice. Her udder looks good, and the baby looks very healthy, and the correct size. I dont think you have anything to worry about there.
