Poor old cow... : (

I wish I'd have seen this--

DH said he was out tagging calves yesterday afternoon and a mama cow came running across the pivot, bellering at him. She stopped a few feet away and watched him, then trotted off.

He went back to catching a calf and here comes that cow again, running across the field, bellering at him. She stopped again, waited and then trotted back to where she'd been.

He watched her go the second time and when she tried to come running up again, he moved toward her. She stopped and trotted back again. This time he followed her.

She had a dead calf over there.
The poor thing was rounding up her cowboy to come fix her baby.

He said he almost cried. He's calved out thousands of cows over the years, but has never seen one do anything quite like this...

Regardless of why the calf died, that is a smart/sweet cow. Hope she gets a second chance in your herd!

Yeah, in fact, she has a bum coming up from the boss's main place, 80 miles south of here.
She gets to adopt.

Sounds like she will make a good foster mother.

Maybe she thought he had her baby, always sad to see how they react to a lost calf.

No, she knew exactly where her baby was. She'd been standing over it since it died.
She came to get him.

Kind of like those cows that'll eat your lunch when you look cross-wise at their babies... Unless they're down in the ears. Then the cow just kind of hangs back. Waiting. They seem to know you're here to help.

But DH has never seen one come, Lassie-style, to bring him...
