Price for Jersey heifer?

My daughter and I went and looked at a friend's Jersey heifer today. It will be her 4-H calf. It was born in September and was recently weaned. He is asking $500. It is registered and comes from good lines (his words, I'm just believing him). Is that a fair price?

Sounds like a very good price to me. I paid $1,000 for a AJCA Identified PA Heifer in September this year (2 steps below full registry) happily. She is out of a Select Sires bull and the mother is gorgeous and a milk machine giving 8 gallons a day to the Carmelite Nuns in PA where I bought her. She was very tame and is simply gorgeous.

Like I said, I didn't think twice about giving $1,000 for her.
Part of that comes from there being nothing worth buying around here where I live for dairy cattle - I am in WV and close to
Oh and Ky.
The only Jersey breeder I know of her in WV charges $1,000 for his heifers as well.

Sounds pretty fair to me for a 4-H project.

If she's a decent heifer, I think it's a fantastic price. I bought one for $400 as a 3 week old last year.....
