More Heifer opinions

More Heifer opinions - Cattle

I fear I am forever questioning things about this heifer - lol!

She is 7 months old Monday - how is her size, from what you can tell with the background items for scale, and how is her weight?

In my post about her color, aftering posting her Dam's name with the OA before it, was told on here, which I appreciate the insight a great deal because I didn't know prior - that she was actually only identified (thus the PA before her own name on the paperwork) by the AJCA as a genetic recovered Jersey, not actually registered. Obviously, I wasn't very happy. . .at all . . .to learn this. I assumed and know the nuns assumed, surely, she was registered when we bought her. When I look at her papers, I just saw the sire and his dam and sire, knew that he was from Select Sires, obviously registed, and the the dam's side just had her sire and dam listed as Purebred Jersey Dam and Sire. . .
Anyway, my question there is what does this mean in regards to pricing any future heifers from her?
Selling them as papered purebred Jerseys would be dishonest, really - right?
I'd hoped my son could show her future calves, so anyway, we aren't the happiest about learning this - but goodness, better to realize the error now.

I dont know how things work over there, but if both her sire and dam are recorded (registered) why cant you register her? You have all her papers.
BTW I cant really tell about her size from that pic, but she looks to be in proportion and a good weight and healthy. What more can any of us ask of a youngster?

If your son is showing open dairy classes in 4-H registry might not matter, it depends on state association rules. If you are selling stock to other homesteaders registration shouldn't matter much. You can't eat or milk papers.

Sorry about the paperwork mess....Send me her chest measurements and I'll use my weight tape and respond with her weight. I have a Jersey the same age to compare with. This is not what you really want to hear, but from the photo she really looks small, but very handsome....remember you asked....So what if she's small, I'd perfer a small Jersey, eats less, more manageable. So measure her girth, behind the front legs and up to the top of her shoulders. If this is problem then just measure one side times two....Topside

I don't mind if she is small. I'd prefer small since I'd ideally wanted a mini, but I couldn't
locate one for sale at the time. I'm just curious. I've considered breeding her to a mini Jersey bull, and I guess I would if she was quite small. Her dam looks like a fairly larger Jersey, and her sire is a Select Sire bull, so I imagine he is fair sized as well, but anyway,
I will take those measurements, but I will try to get a photo of someone besides her, too.

She is recorded through the AJCA. But her recording says Identified - something I didn't note before. I assumed the paperwork was registeration papers, but they are ID papers. I suppose, the way I understand, her daughter's offspring would be registered, as that is the goal of the genetic recovery.

Here is my husband, looking real fine - lol, with Stella a bit ago. He is 6' - and Stella, if he measured right, was 48''in girth.

Stella is right on track. My little Jersey taped at 46 inches, 287 pounds & will be 6 months old on the 25th. Keep in mind though this was the smallest framed calf I have ever raised via bottle...Bottom line Stella is a looker and should end up on the small side when fully grown...Not a bad thing in my opinion...Keep in touch....Topside

Thanks. I am pretty glad to hear she should lean on the small size, esp. since I'd looked for a mini to being with.
