Injections

We brought our Holstein bull calf home today. I sent my daughter who did a great job of picking one with a dry navel and a clean bottom. He took a bottle this evening with no problems.

I've never had a meat animal before. We give goats a Bose shot when they are born, and sometimes a B Complex shot as well. I imagine that you would minimize the number of injections you give a meat animal. Do you give them an 8 way when they are disbudded? If so, where do you inject it?

I don't give mine shots untill I wean at six months. I make sure that the mother is up to date on her shots and she passes enough on that I've never had a problem. check with your vet to see what they recomend for your area. all shots should be given in the neck and limit them to a couple cc's at each site for calfs, the older they get the more cc's you can get away with at one time. also read the banding thread--seems I'm odd man out when it comes to banding around here.

UM, if bought at an auction, there is no control over (or knowledge of) the mother......

I band, give tetanus, and disbud at one month of age all the bottle calf my daughter raises. When they are about six months of age I worm them with injectable and give 7-way vaccine.

Passive immunity only lasts for 2-3 weeks at the most I would give him a CD&T as soon as you can at about a month. As long as you give a shot correctly it shouldn't cause an abcess, you can always give shots subQ in the arm pit or at the base of the neck when they are little. I would go ahead and give him a bose and b12 too and keep some nuflor on hand, auction houses are not easy on calves.
