We Finally Found Her......

and I am so HAPPY!!!

(I am sorry if you belong to the other cow forum and you're seeing this twice, I am just soooo excited!!!)

Her name is Blossom and she is a beautiful 5 year old Jersey. She is bred to a Jersey bull and due to calf on February 18th. Woohoo! The man who sold her to us had to sell her because although she is really sweet to him, she was just not getting along with his nephew. We honestly went there thinking that most likely we would not buy her. The guy that sold her to us warned us that this might not be what we were looking for as he was concerned at how she might act around us. Being that this is our first cow we needed one who is really tame and would allow us to hand milk her. I prayed that if this was the cow for us for our Lord to make it obvious to everyone and that we would get along great. When we got there everyone was shocked at how sweet she was with us. She let us pet her with no problem. She was so sweet. My husband even touched her udder. She lifted up her leg as if she was going to kick, but then turned and saw it was my husband and put her leg back down. The cows we have looked at have all shied away from us (of course because they did not know us) and I honestly felt a little uncomfortable with them. This one acted like she was part of us and honestly my husband and I felt the same way. I guess you could say it was love at first sight. LOL

Praise the Lord!!!

I am so excited and can't wait to get her home!!! I didn't bring a camera with me since I wasn't expecting to get her. As soon as we get her home I will post pics.

And thank you so much for those who reminded me to take my time and not grab the first cow we saw. I can't imagine bringing that first cow home and trying to train her, especially being newbies. This new cow is such a sweetheart and I am so glad we waited for her.

Thanks guys. Hopefully within the next two weeks we can bring her home and I plan on a lot of pics. We've been so disappointed every time we went to meet a cow, that I stopped bringing my camera. I'm hoping before the 10th she will be home.

Finding the right cow can be hard to do, but you may have done it, congrats. Marc

Jennifer ~ how long have you been looking? We are wanting to get a cow this spring (March/April/May). Am I in for a long hunt? Any tips about what resources to use to find one?

We started searching in October 2009. We looked on craigslist.com and Keeping a Family Cow forum. We found her through a combination of both places. One of the ladies from the Keeping a Family Cow forum sent me a link to craigslist. She was two hours away, but very worth it. They are even delivering her for us and she should be here in a couple of days.

Jennifer, congrats on your new girl.

When you get a chance, would you step back a bit more and take a few shots of the important parts too. Like her udder and her feet and her top line (when she is standing on nice level ground and you can see the whole length of her spine...Pretty please?

She is about to drop a calf in the next week or so, right? Good luck with her.

(she looks pretty smart to me)

I'm no expert by any means, but she looks good to me!! Her teats are well placed on a uniform udder that looks like at least the three quarters I see are still working. Her teats are also of a good size for hand milking, provided your hands aren't too big. Here's hoping she has a HEIFER, too!! Congratulations. - Catherine

You're going to spend a lot of time with your cow, so it's good to get one that you can fall in love with. Good luck, and best wishes for an easy calving and lots of milk!
