Needy Jersey Heifer

Hi all. Just thought I'd share a couple pics of my little Jersey. I bought this heifer just before Christmas, because I felt so sorry for her and can't stand to see an animal in need. (I'm a big softie for Jerseys!)

The heifer was 4 months old, very underweight and malnourished. She had ringworm lesions all over, lice, and internal parasite loads. She was also very anemic. She had never had any vaccines or worming. I wasn't sure if I was getting into a real disaster, but for the price I wasn't going to lose much. She had a big potbelly from worms and malnutrition. She didn't come from a salebarn or dairy, but someone that neglected to give her the proper medical care. She was at the bottom of the pecking order and probably didn't get much to eat.

She was put in isolation until her BVD test came back negative. She has been vacc'd and wormed, vit K injection and on a diet prescribed by my vet. The improvement has been amazing.

She is a very sweet heifer and loves her daily halter lessons and grooming. She currently has her own warm stall and large pen. I let her out in the afternoons and she loves to go visit the beef heifers, but doesn't want in with them. They're big and scary!

We call her Charity because she is our little charity case.

Here's Charity the day after I brought her home. Her long coat hides how thin she really was.

Here she is not quite a month later!

I predict that she will repay your care with years of milk, cream, and butter!

Good job, it's nice to hear about someone saving a distressed animal, so often it does not turn out as well. She is a pretty girl.

Aww, thanks everyone. She is a doll. And it's so good to have a Jersey again. It's been about 4 years since I had my last purebred one.
