When I started raising bottle calves several years ago, the only shelter the animals had was three pallets nailed together to make three sides with a South facing opening and wrapped with a tarp on the sides and top. I then took a 16' stock panel and turned it into a "U" shaped run for the animal and attached it to the makeshift shelter. Once the animal was finished with the bottling stage it was old enough to turn out into a pasture and put on hay, grain, and grass.
I think it ultimately depends on your location. I wouldn't reccomend this type of shelter for someone who lives too far North. Where I'm at, it worked fine.
I believe in keeping calves in an environment where they have good access to fresh air. Something to block the cold chilling winds off them is a must though. The fresh air promotes good lung health.
Have you tried reading the sticky about "sale barn bottle calves" at the top of the cattle page?
