Nice "First Milk Cow" info for beginner buyer

I thought this was a nice bit of info for a first time Milk Cow buyer.

I found this posted on the Lex., Ky Craigslist this evening.

http://lexington.craigslist.org/grd/1563686065.html

Probably helpful for anyone on here looking to buy as well.

Good piece. Might want to throw in there the contagious mastitis which is common on dairies. And the milk fever which hits at calving and can't be tested for in advance.

All of which make me veer away from pure dairy cows, especially from big dairies.

Milk Fever is not a disease.
It is a condition brought on by improper management. We had some of the heaviest milking Jerseys in the County and rarely had milk fever cases. WE had to wait two years to get a chance to take a series of pictures on how to treat MF sub-Q. That ended up being a cow we had owned for only four months.
Yes, ask if she has a history of going down with Milk Fever, but it certainly isn't a gven of high producers and cows from dairy farms.
