Culled some cows.....

And was surprised at the money we got from them. Cow prices are low at the moment and all these cows had obvious cull reasons. A couple had bad feet, all were late lactation and open, one had recurring mastitis, one had bad feet and recurring mastitis. All had bad attitudes and were disruptive in the holding pen/milk barn. The only thing not mentioned by the auctioneer before bidding started was the attitudes.

We got over $600 each for two of them, over $550 each for two of them, over $450 for one, and the last cow was old, open, had a bad quarter, a bad foot and cancer-eye, she went for $20. I was very pleased. Was wondering if we would clear $200 per head.

I want to sing each time I open the barn doors and those 6 cows do NOT walk in.

Nice! I paid $650 (Canadian, but close enough) last week for a Holstein fresh last September, bred early December, checked pregnant the day of the sale, milking 65 lbs a day and nothing wrong with her (4 good quarters, low SCC, easy enough to milk). Been buying fresher cows and springing heifers for $750-900.

Glad to hear you did well at the sale barn. Certainly a pleasant surprise.
