Pictures of yearling heifers

Yesterday we moved our 8 heifers from last year home. They have been over on a friends pasture for the past 11 months(since they were calves). Brought them home because we are now feeding hay and its too hard to get hay to their pasture every other day. Also, they needed to run with a bull and I'm not comfortable having a bull on someone elses farm.

So today we ran our youngest Jersey bull, "Vader"(named after Darth Vader of course), down to their pasture. The heifers were duly impressed with his studliness.<grin>

Here are last years babies just meeting their new "man".

In this picture, they are checking out a rag that blew into their field.

Note the badly placed eartag in #807's ear. My first year of tagging calves.LOL!!

This one likes a good neck scratching.

They sure do have their winter hair already. Of course its been pretty cold here already too.

Oh, I just have to guess! 8 Heifers, if average prevails would be around 16 cows to produce. Add this years first calf heifers, and subtract a cull a cow or two..........

21? (not counting these 8 and steers, etc)

We only kept 8 out of last years total crop.
We have a total of almost 100 head, including 3 Jersey bulls, the 60+ milking cows, the 21 dry cows, these 8 heifers, and NOT counting the 5 bull calves that were just born and the 12 keeper heifer calves that have been born so far this year.
With these heifers, the 6 heifers we just freshened, and the heifers we are keeping this year, I am looking foward to doing some culling. There are few cows that I *hate*.........

LOL, isn't it funny how some people think that cow-critters have no personality? I've had some I couldn't bring myself to cull, and a few that I couldn't wait to put on a truck!

TJM, they have been on unimproved/fescue pastures and a small grain ration every day.
tinknal, I want to cull some of these cows soooooo bad, I can taste it. There are a few old girls that must be culled, but then as soon as I'm able I'm going to enjoy culling for personality.
