suddenly a mess

Well, took my heifer Lilly to get bred, which I believe was successful. Sadly she was also successful at bringing home warts and some other strangeness. The warts are gross and are spreading all over her face. She also is loosing large patches of hair around her hips. the hair loss seems to be only in the area she can reach with her teeth. But some of them are suspiciously round. They are kind of raw looking and ashy/ dry. But as I said located only on her hips. I dusted with Lice powder. It got worse. Just doused them with equimectrin today. Is there something else I should do as it is very cold here (12 last night) and she has some nice bald patches? Sorry to repost but I serched ringworm, but it seems to be in the wrong place.

as far as the warts go, they will run their course and go...be sure she is on a good mineral and that her diet is good through the winter...don 't know about the bald spots, but there is always a risk when visiting another farm..

Well, in the summer I would say ivomec, but you don't want to use it in the winter, it could kill a grub and cripple her. You could use ivomec in a shampoo though. I did that with the "lice from hell" on my kids and it wiped them out. "The lice, that is..."

Bald spots could be ringworm, try a little iodine wash, if that won`t work try some anti fungal cream. Thanks Marc.

Sounds like ringworm. Warts would be raised bumps, ringworm is more or less a flat scaly patch. Both will run their course and don't really cause a huge problem. Warts really can't be treated, there is lots of old wives tales out there, but you mostly just need to let them run their course. They are a VIRUS.

Ringworm is a FUNGUS. You can treat it using numerous different things. Coppertox works, some say iodine does, any antifungal should do the trick. Be cautious yourself, though, it is contagious to everyone, humans, cats, dogs, cattle, horses etc. They can all catch it. It's really annoying, and itchy too. Not real serious though. We only treat the cattle if it is causing problems for them. Usually around the eyes, they get scratching and can scratch their eyes and end up with pinkeye. If you're going to be handling her a lot you might want to treat her, just so you don't come down with it.

Oh, and by the by. Once you have either warts or ringworm you will always have them. They live in the soil, and corrals, and new animals (that haven't been exposed before) will come down with it. Usually just calves and yearlings will come down with these.
