Don't bother.
Shoot it up with ralgro, and put it on straight whole shell corn with tend-r-leen pellets.

have a buddy who used to do it when he was in 4H. Made quite an animal.

As Sam said, that is how most calves are fed out in the 4-H shows now days. Steroids, but thank you no, I want nothing to do with eating that calf. But I also like my beef fed grain and alot of people on here don`t like feeding grain either. So do what you need to get that huge 4-h calf, win the trophy, and make lots of bucks at the sale of champions auction. Which has nothing to do with the reality of farming. Thanks Marc

Nothing to do with the reality of farming?
I suppose growth hormones are imagination?
Or grain feeding is as well..

The reality is that a large percentage of the population wants that beef. It's what sells.

Hormones and corn may not be how you do it but it is how a majority do. That is the reality.

Back to the OP.
My kids have been showing 4-H calves for years. We've tried a lot of different bagged feeds but have found the best all-around feeding regiment is to give them unlimited access to grass hay, free choice minerals, water, and a mixture of corn and alfalfa pellets. My daughter has won the "rate-of-gain" competition twice now.

well raising a calf to market weight has everything do do with farming! and bailing 25 acres of hay with a 14-12-9-8 year old kids that they feed to there 4-h project animals shows them more than then money, but respect of hard work and what you will achieve in the end!!as for hormones anyone can get that at the store or take the easy way out for a 4-h project!Ive heard about the tendrleen i will thanks for the site link will do some homework on it.

We got about a foot all together springvalley,...bout in the middle of the state...

I fed the tendrleen a few years back when corn was 100 a ton and I wasn't having luck finding decent hay at a decent price.
We never used the ralgro but our neighbor who had the feedlot behind us did.

Corn and tendrleen makes some good beef.
