Price on Reg. Jersey Heifers

What would the price (AVERAGE range) be on reg. Jersey Heifers if sold upon being weaned in your area? I hope prices pick up before we need to worry about pricing because ours will not even be breed for a year, but I am curious. I would be selling in the Oh, WV and Ky. There is a demand in my location, but there are no breeders, so hopefully, that will work in my favor.

About 50 to 100 dollars more than a grade animal . If you have test or milk records and classified will help raise the price . You will need a market to sell them who will buy them .Most dairies need larger animal to fit in the parlors. Small farms don't have a lot a money right now and hobby farm are in small demand . If you think you have a gold mine probly not you need to find the market sad but true

Around here for Reg heifers 8 weeks to 3 months $500-$800 per hd. For non reg but full jersey $350-$500. Short bred Reg to Reg Jersey up to $1200, ready to calve sky's the limit for heifer's or milking cows.

Gregg is right on the mark for price, you should have no problem getting rid of your heifer , there are alot of people looking for family milk cows. And jersey`s make the best. lol. Thanks Marc.

I paid $1,000 for our heifer in PA (we live in WV), and so I am hoping to be able to get around that from her offspring (plan to breed with AI and sexed semen). Hopefully, since there is no one selling registered Jersey cattle locally, that will help. Thanks!

The only thing I will add. I see on another board people trying to sale 3 quarter cows and old cows for top $. My rule is if I want milk it , I cull it for weigh cow price at the sale barn. I have milked cows for over 20 yrs and will not sale a cull cow for milk cow prices. I like my cows but don't grow attached to them by giving names and making pets out of them. They are a clog in the business wheel, if broken cull it no questions.

Think we stold our Jersey cow and heifer calf....$900 for both. Divorce fire sale and they even delivered it. Kinda wild but now both are gentle,halter-broke and we are enjoying all the milk we want. Heifer out of a top purebred bull and we just bred Mama back to same...she is purebred but no papers. Calf looks better than many I've seen at the fairs. DEE

FYI,
For those of you that aren't aware of it, the Jersey Associate is now doing a genetic recovery program that is allowing ANY offspring of a registered jersey bull to be registered as a OA (original animal) Litterally it doesn't matter if the dam is a hereford or simmental! Then, that animal's offspring can be registered up a level, and so on. After about three generations you have a bonefied "purebred" as they call it. I've wondered many times why some jerseys in the show ring have a white spote or two on their side and are nearly as tall as a holstein!!!

I just thought I'd pose this situation to anyone buying a "registered" jersey heifer. If the registration papers are "original animal" even though the dam may have been purebred the animal isn't considered registered to the highest degree. Most local and some state shows will allow them to be showed though.

I gave $450 for a registered heifer a couple of months ago at a dairy sale. She's not quite breeding size and she's a real nutjob. She haltar broke really well and she'll stand and let you rub on her udder. However, she could be shrunk up and starved to death and she WILL NOT come to the feed bucket like the others I've raised in the past. She's absolutely skittish of humans of any size, shape, or color. Once you get her caught, she leads like a dog. It just takes a while to get it done.
