Cool I am showing a heifer

I have almost no experience with cattle. But this year at my school I have a chance to show one! She is a little Hereford, and a real sweetie. Her "name" is 22W. I think she was born around February/March of this year. She was shipped here yesterday, and I'm showing her on Sunday. We get along very well. She's slightly halter broke, but not very good. I spent a few hours walking with her today and she improved a lot! I also gave her a bath, probably the first one shes ever had.

Shes very calm. Some other girl was practicing with her heifer too, and it got away from her and ran right into my little 22W when I was leading her, but she barely flinched! I was sure she would get scared and run me over, but she didn't even seem alarmed. I didn't know cattle (or any animal) came so calm!

Wish me luck!

Sounds like you got a good one to start with. The first one my daughter showed was bullet proof followed by several nutjobs in a row. It just takes a lot of time and dedication and lots of TLC and you'll do fine. Good luck with the show on Sunday.

Wow, good luck, Abby!
I'd be sure to hang on to a heifer like that and breed to keep those calm genes! Those type of cattle seem to be easy keepers and have tender meat, too.

I sure wish she was mine so I could keep her! Unfortunately, she belongs to the school (Michigan State) and we dont have any cows anyway. She doesnt have great conformation...she seems to like to have her feet very close together and has a low-set neck.

But I think the reason that we were to show heifers instead of steers is because the school is probably keeping them and figured it would be a waste for us to tame steers that wouldnt be kept. Maybe.
