Jersey in discomfort

Last evening after milking and this evening too my Jersey has started jumping around, kicking up lots of dirt, and shaking her head. Tonight she even got down on her front legs and was rubbing her ears against the ground.

Ear mites????

What do you all think and treatment? My two books don't give any guidance.

Thanks.

Probably just a bug in her ear. I would pour mineral oil in both ears and see what happens. Should not hurt her regardless.

Sounds like she just feeling good to me. Sometimes a cow will snort and paw around like a bull just because they can.

Not the sort of thing I would get too concerned about at this stage unless it carried on for a few days. Mine are going through "spring fever" - at least that's what I call it - and some are doing much the same thing. When I brought them in for milking they roared across the paddock with tails up in the air, had a scrummage at the gate, roared across the next paddock to the race and across the bridge. They liked the noise they made on the bridge so much they all turned around and roared across it again. One of these cows has arthritis but suddenly it disappeared The lead cow got down on her knees and proceeded to try and dig up the race with her horns and head, then got up and belted down to the cow shed panting and worn out with the others not much better.

Once in a blue moon cows carry on like idiots and it sounds to me that your little Jersey is having what my mother would have called "a mad half hour".

Cheers,
Ronnie

Thanks for the help. Probably just a passing thing as it hasn't happened again.

Rockfish,
Do you keep her sprayed for flies? I've noticed my cows doing this to get dirt splashed up under their necks and muzzles. I think they're trying to coat themselves with dirt to hold the flys at bay. Maybe so, maybe no. I would also think that she's just simply feeling her oats.
