Registering a Shorthorn Calf

I bought a heifer two years ago to show in 4-H. She's a registered beef Shorthorn. So I got her bred last year, and she calved about two weeks ago with this real nice looking heifer calf. I'm starting college soon, so I'm gonna sell the cow and calf to another 4-H kid that wants to show them. I was trying to figure out how to register her, I'm use to registered dairy goats, so I pretty much know the process. But, for the tattoo, do you have to have a registered prefix, or do you just pick a random identification thing? Cause it says it's like a hundred dollars to get a lifetime prefix. I've tried looking at the American Shorthorn Association's website, and the original membership package they sent out, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the tattoo. Also, for the registered name, do you have to register a herd name to put in the very front of the name as well?
Thanks so much!
Heather

Depends on the individual breed association's specific guidelines. Some require your prefix to be registered with them while others don't. Just call or email the Shorthorn Association. I'm pretty sure you have to be a member of the Association to transfer papers though. (Might be wrong)

I don't think you have to be a member, you just pay a higher rate if you aren't a member. But I am a member, so that's not a problem anyway. After reading as much as I could about the tatto info, it seemed like you don't have to pay for one, or have a registered tattoo identification unless you wanted a lifetime one. I didn't know if anyone on here was a member of it, and knew or not.
