Calf Shedding

Sorry for posting all these questions! I guess it comes with being new to the cattle business :P

Ever since I got this calf he's been shedding. After I brought him home I noticed that he has a small bald patch on his back and a slightly larger one on his rump. It hasn't been that hot until just recently here so I doubt its a heat issue. He's well hydrated, taking two to three bottles a day, drinking water and eating hay and grain at will. Eyes are bright and he isn't scouring. Breathing is normal too. A few days ago he did have runny eyes but I think it was just because I took him out in some tall grass to graze and they might have gotten a tad scratched up.

Any idea what's going on? Am I just over worrying?

IMO, the calf has lice. I would give the calf a shot of Dectomax. If that is not available then Ivermectin pour-on will work.

Hmm, I don't think so. I've looked him over and he doesn't seem to have anything like that. Plus I've been feeding him everyday and had to carry him to several places and I don't have lice yet, lol.

Should I be able to see them? I looked over the calf again and I don't see any sort of bugs on him at all.

I just noticed that the barn cats are shedding and so is our dog. Maybe it is just summer shed?

You probably will not see them. You can read this and get an idea of the size. http://www.iowabeefcenter.org/pdfs/bch/03805.pdf . Here is a pic of part of my herd.

If he was new to my farm and had bald spots on his back and rump, I would go ahead and treat him for parasites, just to rule it out.

Eric, buy some pour-on liquid and apply. It's another must have item on the homestead..Topside
