the value of a cow

So this guy wants my husband to trade work on his tractor for a pregnant dutch belted. she is of good health, and her markings are correct as far as I know. he had papers on his original stock, but never kept up so this is 5th generation with no papers.

the guy wont name a price, but I think he doesnt know what to ask.

so what is this cow worth? this is dairy country, but no belteds around. can someone give a roud bout value?

she has never been milked.
thanks

A rough idea would be as a breed beef cow. I would say around 600-700. There is alot of belts over in the southwest corner of wisconsin. My cousin bought a 2 month old heifer for 400 last fall

When will she calve? What is she bred to? How old is she? 1st calf , 2nd, 3rd, or?? All these questions factor into her value. As for setting the price, maybe the guy is waiting to see what the tractor repairs cost?

I'm with ksfarmer. I'd have the guy quote a value on the animal before agreeing to fix a tractor with an unknown repair cost. Have you tried contacting one of the breeders on the Belted Association's homepage?

Not having seen the cow and assuming that she has a good udder, solid conformation and produces well. I would think her value would be around $1500. A good jersey goes for 1200 to 2500. Dutch Belted cows are so rare I would think you would pay a very pretty penny for one Contact a breeder to be sure ( that is if you can find one

Someone said that it was a beef cow. Well, a dutch belted is a dairy cow and a belted Galloway is a beef breed.

No, what was said was "a rough idea would be as a beef cow......" not that she was a beef cow.

The value of anything is only dictated by how much you are prepared to pay for it or the value to each of you in the transaction. For example, I once wanted a little Jersey cow, value undeclared. Her owner wanted 3 trailers of firewood. The value of the cow would have been greater than the firewood but we both got what we wanted. Bartering is not always about true value but about each party getting what they require and being satisfied.

Cheers,
Ronnie
