My highland has pink eye

I just noticed that one of my highland has pink eye. I googled but only find that a spray antibiotic works but can not find a name.

Can I purchase this at TSC or do I need to go to the vet.

thanks
Penny

Penny, there are different types of pinkeye. The prevalent type that we have in NC will spontaneous heal itself within two weeks. That is why all the home remedies work. I suggest you do nothing for the 2 week period. If the problem still exists after that time period you will need to get medication from a vet.

make sure you isolate the cow and watch the others close, the crap we get around here spreads quickly and is hard to treat.

I've read alot of amazing claims about kelp meal treating/preventing pinkeye. We didn't start providing it again this year until we had pinkeye show up. It seems to have worked on some of the animals but I'm not so sure that they are all eating the kelp either.

One lady on the www.naturesharmony.proboards.com board said that she used a neighbors bull that had white in his eye from an old case of pink eye and he chowed down on kelp while she had him. She said that his eye is now all cleared up.

If you end up having to treat it, your vet will probably say to give them a couple treatments of LA200 every other day.

our vet gave us penacillin to use as a eye wash and that seemed to work pretty good

Pizier Puffer, is a very good product to use for pink eye. It is used in catd dogs and horse for wounds. Its a powder in a squeeze bottle hence "puffer name". It used to be labeled for pink eye years ago, but it has been changed. The vets around here still recommend it. Also there could have been a irration to the eye which also cause pinkeye like problems. If it gets to bad the vet can inject antibiotics directly into the eye ball itself and heal it.

When I first came out here

I had a cow develop pinkeye. I went to the old man here who is considered "Webster on Cattle" as was Shanghai Pierce. The advice given was "Take two aspirin, wait two weeks and she will be cured".

Sure enough, she was. Another cow several years later developed a case of pinkey and got a white spot in her eye afterward. Took a long while, but that went away too.
