Tape Measure Weight

I have heard about some of you measuring your cows/calves to see how much they weigh. I have been very curious to how much my 2 month old jersey heifers weigh as well as their Mid-size mamas.

Can you explain this or help me figure out how to do it?

The tape I use I got from Jeffers. I doubt it would work on something that small. You basically measure the circumference behind the front legs on the tape and read the weight off the scale based on condition.

Since they are small, you could probably use the formula they use on sheep. You measure (in inches) behind the front legs and call that C. Then you measure the from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump and call that L. Then the formula is C*C*L/300 = weight in lbs. Works on Sheep, have not tried it on young calves.

Use a cloth measuring tape, and PM me the measurement and I'll tell you via my tape what they weigh...Topside
