Just got my first tame cow - milk heifer!
Not sure why, but I have been looking for a milk cow. - A cow that can be milked, not necessarily milking. We finally found one that I think really suits us. She is a 14 month 3/4 milking shorthorn, 1/4 red angus. She was raised by a 4H kid, and is halter broke, and can be touched all over. I will need to keep up with the lead training, which will be a challenge for me, as I do not really know cows. We have only ever had wild like herefords.
I am just SO excited to have a cow that I can lead around and touch.

J, looks like you picked a winner. Keep up the training and hugs and she'll likely never let you down...Sharp animal....Topside

She's a great looking heifer, should make you a good momma cow, and you could probably make a milk cow out of her, if you wanted. Congratulations.

Something that can come in handy too, if you can find a treat that she likes......maybe like alfalfa cubes or pellets, or a bit of sliced bread.
If she was raised by a 4-H'er, more than likely she also is used to (and likely enjoys) being washed & shampooed occasionally, and brushed out. Some sort of curry brush like you might use on horses works great!
Congrats on the tame heifer!

Reminds me of my favorite old cow, a beef shorthorn. She had the calmest temperament. She was just a beef cow, never halter trained or broke or anything, yet I could walk up to her and her calf, and she'd let me milk her. I sold her to a friend, but I still see her once in a while.

We bought her to be a milk cow. We will have her AI'd milking shorthorn. She is just fine having her udder and feet and everywhere touched. She doesn't really like it when I spray her for flies, but she doesn't run off and freak like my horses either. She moves sway a bit but doesn't leave the feed bucket.
She is a real sweetie. Doesn't even get up when I come scratch her out in the field. I spend time with her every day. My new pet, lol. I hope to have a wonderful relationship with her by spring.

LOL, no she is not very "dairy" looking, FINE with me. i don't need a ton of milk, just enough to use would be real nice. We will breed her milking shorthorn the first time and prob angus after that, depending on the result, lol.
I go out and mess with her every day. She is real good about it. I at least go out and pet and scratch her in the pasture. Every few days I lead her into the stall and brush her and put some marigold fly spray on her. I worked last night on combing the curls at the end of her tail. she would rather I not do that, but was still good, lol.

I am raising a steer to put in the freezer, and I have him hand-trained to bread. He will follow me from one pasture, through the yard to the other with a few slices of bread. His name is T-bone, and I can call his name and show him the bread package, and he will come running. I can pet him too. It makes life soooo much easier to have him easy to handle. BIL had 3 bull calves running with him and they are wild. He looks at them like they are crazy.
