Banding Site Infection Help

I have a steer who I banded a couple weeks ago. He seems to have developed an infection at the banding site, as it is a little red and puffy. He's not way off, but maybe acts like he doesn't feel great either. I boiled the site with Hydrogen Peroxide tonight, then applied a liberal coating of Iodine. I went to TSC to get some spray to keep the gnats and flies off of it, but they were already closed, so I'll have to pick that up tomorrow. I want to be proactive on this, so what antibiotic do you recommend for this?

TIA,

Penicillin is my drug of choice for these types of things. Infected wounds, foot rot and pinkeye are about all I use penicillin for.

If I have a grizzly one, I spray 7% iodine onto the site.

If he's small enough throw him down to the grass and see what's really happening and disinfect...I've seen some ugly one's that turn out fine...Topside

Where can I find 7-percent Iodine at?

I threw him down on the ground tonight and applied the hydrogen peroxide and iodine.

Topside, do you recommend an antibiotic or just the iodine? It's decently red around the side and sort of hard to the touch.

TS, I've seen that sight many times. Never worried, outcome has always been positive. Of couse these are your calves and do whats best. You could also put LA-200 on the site but me I'd stick with 7% or gentle iodine. Of course 7% is the route to go. Squirt some on site every three days. Once again redness and hardness is common when banding....However I''m not in NC to help, so take every precaution necessary and beyond. 7% in my area can be bought thru the feed store, just had to sign a document saying that the liquid is for animals not drug addicts. Another way is to get it thru your Vet...Topside

One more thing, I'd bypass the LA200 it's very sticky and the calf would have dirt stuck to the site....Stick with iodine, but that's me.
