Would like opinions

On this cows condition.

She just raised a calf who is about to be weaned at 8 and a half months. Did I let her get to thin?

I don't think she looks too thin. Actually she looks pretty good. If thats her calf in the pic with her, she did a fine job raising him. Once he is weaned she will put back on a few lbs.

That's kind of what I thought, I felt she was on the lean side of a healthy weight. My grandma thinks she's "poor".

She had fat pads on her backside back before she calved and I didn't want to give her chance to get obese again and become infertile. My grandparents think cows need to be rolling around the field.

Yes, that's her calf.

She's a little on the lean side, but with the grass you have there it shouldn't take her long to put some condition back on once she is weaned. Is she a 2 year old? Whatever the case, her calf looks really good too.

I don't remember if she is 2 or 3 this spring. I think three. Yes, we are blessed with good pasture this year, we have a lot of clover, mainly yellow, but white and red too.

She would have to be a 3 year old to have a calf this size. Though not skinny it is good the calf is being weaned. I am more concerned of a thin cow not breeding back than a fat one. Is this cow bred at this time? IMO, a bred cow will put on weight faster than an open cow.

Why do you say this? Our 2 year olds regularly raise calves that look like that at 7-8 months.

To have a calf 8.5 months old she was bred about 18 months ago. The minimum age she could be is 2.5 years old (if she was bred at 12 months of age).

She looks to be a BCS of 3 on the nose. With that I'd say she's in pretty good condition. With a bit of grass (and maybe grain if you wish to treat her to some) she'll get some more weight on. But yeah, she's just fine.

If the animal was bred at 15 to 18 months of age she would be 24+ to 27+ months old when the calf was born. The calf is now 8 1/2 months old. Add that to the 24+ to 27+ months of age when the calf was born would give you a current age of 32 1/2+ months to 35 1/2+ for the cow.

The only thing wrong is the cow should have done been bred back.

Well, we waited because we wanted her to calve in spring, not fall like she did with this one.
