All you Jersey people

take a look at this. Holsteins can really do the job, too. This is from last night's milking and I thought I'd brag. I had a few high test Holsteins that I kept back when I sold my herd last spring.

That's a good head of cream! What are you feeding her?

Yes indeed, black and white cows can make plenty of cream.

Nice pic.

Rachael you beat me to it. I was going to say that if that milk had been from a Jersey I would expect the jar to be half cream.

Sorry Jennifer, Friesians can and do test quite high but they are hard put to outdo a Jersey. However, that said it's still not a bad head of cream and will go nice on the porridge in the morning.

Cheers,
Ronnie

Matt, that is a LOT of cream. I have a Jersey but don't get anywhere close to that much cream. she's only grass/hay fed and still has her calf on. I'm hoping that she'll give us more cream when the calf is weaned.

This particular cow's milk was mid to late lactation, so it has a bit more cream that it did in the beginning. She was fed grass/hay and 2 cups each of alfalfa pellets and 16% dairy at the time. All 4 of my Jerseys give different amounts and consistencies of cream.

Rachel

BTW...not too shabby for a holstein though.

Hi, everyone, forgot to get back here to this thread. That cow is just on grass now, with about a couple of pounds of grain once a day.

I've always had Holsteins, with a few crosses in the herd, and one of the others milking right now is a 3/4 Jersey, and her milk is nowhere near as rich as this one cow. To be honest, I don't like milk that creamy for out and out drinking, but you sure can't beat it for butter! I've made my year's worth of butter from that one cow in the last month or so.

I'll have to go put some milk in a quart jar to see how Ayrshire milk compares. Last test I looked at the entire herd had a 4.6% butterfat. Heather
