significance of extra teat on a dairy cow?

how often do dairy cows have extra teats? Do you cull for exta teats? Any ramifications to having extra teats? How heriditary are they?

just noticed that the heifer in my barn has an extra teat. Wondering what that means in the long and short term.

thanks
Cathy

It just means that a milking machine might not fit on them right later on. Many people trim them off.

Cathy, it's very common and isn't anything to be concerned about. Depending on where they are, it can mean that if you machine milk they will foul the cup and it won't fit properly as Callie has already mentioned but if that's not going to be an issue, leave it alone.

I have two cows with extra teats, both of which are blind and as they don't get in the way of the cups, I don't worry about them.

Cheers,
Ronnie
