First Dexter bull calf - Pics

He was born last night. He is already driving his moma crazy running after him as he tries to catch our chickens.

He is my first Dexter bull calf and I was wondering how many days I should wait before I band him?

Here are some pics of him from this afternoon.

Thanks. He is a cute fella. Almost feel bad about having to steer him. But like I told my boys today, he is not to be made into a pet.

Another two heifers to calve. I hope they do as good a job as his mama is.

I raise Dexters too and I have decided that they are too valuable to butcher out.

Out here they are cheap. 70 to 90 cents a pound live weight for young stock.

And that is Canadian cents. Are you getting better prices out there?

Adorable pics! I love momma's tongue wrapping around him in the first pic. You can band him as soon as both testicles have descended.

Another calf!

A heifer this time. But just as black as the first calf and bigger than him to. She was born last night without any assistance.

Her moma is the sister to the first cow but one year younger. This is her first calf and It looks like she is going to be just as good at her job as her sister. Both momas are red and look almost identical.

Both had black calves. I guess my bull will just throw black offspring.

I will try and get some pics later.

Pics

Here she is. Both mommas wanted to wash her this morning. Her momma is on the left looking a little possesive.

Here is the bull meeting his newest offspring.

Here she is meeting older but not bigger brother. He was sleeping in this morning. His momma is very interested in her as well. She is very maternal and will allow calves other than her own to nurse from her.

Thanks!

One more heifer left to calve. She is a fair bit smaller than the other two and my bull is on the large size for a Dexter. She is starting to look like a beach ball with legs.

I will have to keep a close eye on her when she calves.
