the cow comes today! a family farm first for us

I've been blathering here for the last 8 months about getting a calf - the heifer (not ours) is being brought over here today to calf soon. DD is 5/4 though everyone thinks she'll go sooner but, well, time will tell.

The calf will be ours to keep and the heifer will return to her normal dairy farm a few days after calfing. Our neighbors, the dairy farmers, thought we might enjoy the birth process and that it might be safer having the calf born here since it will stay here. Neighbors are 5 minutes away - the vet is close by and on alert - we should be fine.

I'm so used to our dairy goats by now that I can't help wondering 'what the heck was I thinking!' and also dreading the coming of big splattering poops. Still, all very exciting!

The heifer is a jersey/holstein who our neighbors ai'd with the old world jersey semen (from a 1964 bull!) for us. We'll know soon enough whether a little heifer or bull calf is our new barnmate.

Congratulations. Like me, you will have a couple of years to worry about milking. And the poops start pretty small and work up, so you will have time to adjust to that too! LOL.

Have fun!

Congratulations! Waiting on a pregnant cow is the hardest part. Callie's right about the poops...LOL you'll get used to big splattering cow poops before long LOL
Of course we want to see pictures of the little one as soon as it is born!
