A Rude Awakening

{6:45 am.} What on earth is that SOUND?!

Throw on boots and coat to investigate. It sounds like...a chainsaw? a poorly-played tuba? Obviously an UNHAPPY cow!

Closest cattle to my house are about half a mile away so I just start walking.

The neighbor has been having some 'containment issues' lately so I really thought that I was going to find a calf that had been struck on the road. I had a sick feeling in my stomach. The agonised bellowing, tortured screaming, the kind of sounds that make a person go...Uh-Oh!

As I get closer to the source I see that there are already people present. The stocktrailer is backed up to the corral and a few guys standing well back from the panels.

Inside the pen is a beautiful 5 y/o black angus bull, and he is NOT pleased.

Turns out he is to be the new herd sire over here. Once he calms down! I guess they had to tranq him to get him to load and what I was awakened by was the sound of him coming out of it. Holy cow, I have never heard anything like it in my life. It was worse than the shrieking of a mortally wounded horse (which is gut-wrenching).

His voice is so deep and loud, it rattles in your chest and makes your hair stand on end.

Now, after almost 4 hours he is getting a little bit quieter...laryngitis is my friend today.

I sure hope he calms down soon. Surely he is not going to take 3 days, like the calves do? Is he? Please tell me he is going to mellow out.

He is my new neighbor bull and we have now been introduced! Holy smokes is he SOMETHING!

Ahhh, I feel your pain. My neighbors across the lane have a cattle operation, and I have to close my windows against the horrible crying of mama cattle looking for the babies when they seperate them. It literally brings tears to my eyes, it is so sad. And goes on for days.

I hope the containment issues have been taken care of, at least as far as the new bull is concerned.

A loud bull is a healthy bull.

Ernie, he's about the healthiest bull I ever heard! LOL.

Peg, no kidding! He is in a stout corral for now, but I hope the weather will permit some fencing to get done before long. We are under a tornado watch for tonight...

He did finally settle down some. I hear him over there some still (beating up the water trough), but he sort of whispers when he bellows. I cant hear it in the house at least.
