Worse, much worse. I quit raising handfuls of dairy steers, no money there...Sorry, but that's fact and my opinion....Topside

Some reports have dairy farms selling off their cows for meat since they can't afford to feed them- as in lots of them. I don't think the market is good right now.

Now...if you wanted to raise jersey heifers....there is a market. Try finding one of those for sale anywhere close to home! Lots of folks trying to find a good family milk cow.

MOJO, my best guess is 35 cent a pound on a GOOD day. The sale barn and buyers don't want them. Yellow fat, grow far to slow, small frame, poor Jersey steer has everything going against him....EXCEPT FLAVOR. I personally fill my freezer with Jersey when the opportunity presents itself, best meat I've raised....Can't give you recent numbers because no one is raising them in volume for commercial market....Jersey Heifers as mention will sell everyday of the week for money making prices....Sorry to give you the truth, but I've been there. Back when I was raising Holstein steers they were bringing $1.25 a pound (300=400 pound class) as you know those prices per pound no longer exist.....Topside

Another quick example, I can bring a Holstein to 900-950 pound in 12 months. A Jersey will take 18 months or more to reach those numbers...My point is that they are extremely slow growers....Good for them, bad for us...Topside
