Know why the heifer died

Today I went to the feed store to get some oral antibiotics to have on hand for my bull calf - just in case. I also picked up some electrolytes. I was talking to the manager of the store and mentioned that it was an awkward dilution on the electrolytes - 1 package for 5 gallons of water.

IT IS 1 PACKAGE FOR 55 GALLONS OF WATER. I fed my baby calf salt water....heavily salted water. No wonder she went so quickly.

I am really sick about this.

Awww! I'm so sorry! Don't beat yourself up too much. We ALL make mistakes.

We (hopefully) learn from it and move forward--wiser, so we don't make that same mistake again.

Darn it callies, sorry to hear that...often the mistakes we learn from are the more harder ones we make.

I have been quite hard on myself over it. I actually gave it to them like that twice - once when they first arrived and once later. The bull seemed to weather it okay - he is looking a bit scruffy rather than sleek.... Dadgum it!!!!

Jersey heifers for a home milk cow are very very hard to come by. Those that have them up here do embrionic placement or something like that. So their calves are not for sale - only springing heifers -at over $2000 apiece.

I will keep trying though.

She was so much smaller, it probably hit her kidneys a lot harder than the bull calf. So very sorry about the hard lesson, but, she was a gamble when you bought her.

Copper I hope you're not referring to the tiny heifer that Callie lost last week: http://homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=301236

Callie, I feel for you...loosing two heifers in that short period of time...

Karin, it is the same calf - just one was lost. Thankfully! I don't think I could do it again for a long time if I lost two!

big hugs. I think it's really hard to avoid those mistakes every once in a blue moon. Please have compassion for yourself and know that you did your best - the mistake was completely unintentional.
