Tailwagging,
I have a small cow/calf operation in Middle Tennessee. I have 49 head of black Angus cattle including my bull and a few calves. I let my bull run with the herd all the time. I usually segregate my cows just shortly before they calve just so I can keep an eye on them. I usually keep them out of the herd for a week to insure that the calf is doing okay, then I turn them back into the herd.
I separate my heifers from the bull when they're about 1 year old and hold them out until they're 16 - 18 months old, then turn them back into the herd.
It seems to work for me.
Good luck,
Tom in TN
