What would this calf be worth?

We just bought a new milk cow from some friends of ours. She is a sweet Jersey Brown Swiss mix named Mocha. They just told us that they have decided to sell the calf she had a month ago. We would love to buy her but have no idea how much she would be worth. She is a 1/4 Jersey 1/4 Brown Swiss and 1/2 Man-Anjou 4 week old heifer calf. Any idea what she is worth? We really do not want to underpay or over pay. Any idea?

Thanks for your help!

Rebecca

Why do you want the calf? The calf IMO will mature into a too large and less efficient home milk cow that will need lots of grain to reach her potential.. On the other hand, the calf would be a good beef animal and that is what I would want to pay for.

We want her to nurse her mom so we can only milk once a day and be free to go out of town without having to find someone to milk for us. We will eventually butcher her for beef.

Thanks,
Rebecca

In the case of wanting her to nurse her mama, I'd say she'd bring about $150-$200 at the local sale barn providing she doesn't show too much Jersey in her.

Topside or others are better qualified to establish a value. Someone will show up to give you a suggested price. I sell older calves and this is out of my comfort zone.

$150 to $200 is a reasonable price since she is a month old already....

No more than $200.00 realistic price might be $125.00

If you try to sell here any where around here, she might not bring a hundred.

Agreed that $150-$200....Week old Black calves at auction go for around $90-$100 each. These calves are usually Angus/Jersey mix, so the above prices sound fair. If you guys are good friends why worry about it??? Topside

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help.

Topside-

They are very new to the cow business and have asked us what a fair price would be. I wanted to make sure we were not underpaying or overpaying to be fair to both of us. Thanks

Sounds good Rebecca, $175 for the calf, plus two t-bone steaks if it comes to that. $175 should be very fair for both parties...Let us know what you decide, plus photos of course...Topside

If you just want a calf to nurse to and put in the freezer later on, who not go and pick up a holstein bull calf form a local dairy????

I don't know about where you are but in my area the dairy farms are shooting bull calves, not even bothering to take them to auction due to the low value of them!

It may be a cheaper way to go?
