Prices will vary by region, gender, bloodlines, color, horned/polled, carrier/non-carrier (and related testing), health care, and more. I imagine you could expect to pay anywhere from $800 on up....look at as many as you can because I truly believe you learn a lot from visiting farms and seeing how their animals are cared for and how the animals react to the owner and visitors.

Edited to add: temperament is also important!

A lot of variables. The prices are all over the place. I paid 70 cents per pound for my unregestered stock.

A proven hand milked cow would go for much more.

If it helps we just paid $350 for an 8 month old registered heifer calf. Black, polled, long legged and soon to be halterbroke (by previous owner). Exactly what I wanted.

We were told that her really good young registered bred heifers go for $1200 tops(polled, long legged).

It really does depend on what area you are in. I usually sell my weaned heifers for $700.00 and bull calfs for $300.00. I have them de-horned vaccinated and at least broke to stand tied, if not broke to lead when they leave here. Of course a bred cow or a pair would be another story.

In the center of the US. Typically heifers start at $800-$900. Bred cows are usually $1200 and up. Steers usually $350, and bulls usually $500-$1000.

Typically carriers of Chondro (Shortlegs) are higher, Polled are higher, and dun and red are higher.

Hope that helps

And your Dexters are sure fine specimens! Della had her first calf and she is gorgeous, too.

Of course, the two were escape artists for a while but I think I fixed it so they can't get out anymore. They are not happy but will get over it Bubba the Aussie pup is doing really well as well. He is a wonderful dog, despite the fact he can't hear. Very smart as well.

(Sorry for the thread drift .... my Outlook crashed and I lost P.J.'s email address)
