help/opinions

I have located a cow that is 4 years old, bred back due in June (third calf), currently being dried off originally from an organic jersey dairy. I am including pictures, and would like to hear from you--good points and bad. I just need opinions on her confirmation, not her circumstances. My daughter is looking for a milk cow to show in 4-H--in a county that hasn't had any milk cows at fair in over 10 years!

She's cute. Confirmation wise, her back's a litt;e sway, her front shoulder assembly points a bit backwards, and she a bit posty in the rear. I don't like her front hooves, a bit weak in the pasterns. I love those big brown eyes though.

She looks like she could use her hooves trimmed. But, if the price were right she wouldn't be a bad cow to start out with.

I love her eyes. I don't know much about cows, but I would love to have a jersey like her someday.

What would be considered a good price in the rocky mountain area?

I have no idea for your area, but around here she would go for at least 400.00 to maybe 600.00

In a county with no milk cows in the fair, she be good for at least 2nd place. If you're looking for a cow to milk, maybe... if she's CHEAP. Frankly, her conformation sucks.

Being truthful, that cow has about the worst confirmation that I have seen! I have great grand ma beef cattle that are 14 years old that would win over her. Why disappoint the child with a no chance animal?

Is she easy to milk? What do her production records look like? Can you view any of her calves?

Yes, she is sway backed and needs her feet trimmed. She has a nice enough udder that's well balanced with ok teats.

But if she is easy to handle I would consider her a starter cow to learn on and move up ASAP. Maybe she'll have a better heifer and you're started. Just don't keep her long as her back will only get worse.

Thanks for all of the help--sorry I couldn't get back online sooner! We decided to pass on her...too many wrongs, not enough rights. The clincher was when I called him and asked about the teat length and he told me they were two inches long, I looked at my hand and said "Yeah, like that's going to work!". We are still looking, so hopefully this spring we can find one.
Thanks again!
Laura
