immediate help please

I have a calf that needs drenched immediatly. I realize this might not help at this stage but I want to know how to make a homeade drencher as the local feed store was out and no one wants to help. My calf is going down hill fast. He is at the point of not sucking a bottle and I have to use everything I have to pick him up to his feet. Dont sugar coat things I realize chances are slim it will work but please help any ideas on how to make a drencher is needed. Thanks Sheryl

Your emergency is giving me limited info. The best I can do for you is recommend giving the calf Gatorade, cherry flavor is best. I'm presuming that it's dehydrated, sunken eyes, depression, and unable to get up without help. One thing I definately would not be doing is feeding more milk or replacer. If the calf is at the point that I'm invisioning then giving an IV is the best choice remaining. Visit the calf hourly. touch it's body and attempt to give small amounts of Gatorade into the mouth and pray for a happy outcome. Tubing electrolytes is another option, however it's been my belief that the stomach cannot absorb the liquids fast enough to rehydrate the calf. If it's scouring stop feeding milk type products NOW. Limited info prevents me from helping any further....Topside

Hi Sadie; What is happening with the calf, how old etc? What is his temperature, how do his eyes look are his ears cold? Is he down? If he is, I wouldn't be drenching him but tubing. Anyway impossible to give any constructive advise if we don't know so take a minute and write the symptoms. Don't panik. Liz

More info and I'd be glad to continue helping....breed of calf, age of calf, what were you feeding and how much before it went down. Where did you buy the calf? Where do you live? All these questions are important...Topside

Last night I came up with an idea to make my own tuber (not drencher meant tube). I used fish tank tubing however I could not get it into the stomach. I tried about 30 times and hit the lungs every time. I tried really hard to save him but to no avail. He passed early this morning. thanks every one for your concerns. Sadie
