Are your highlands registered?

just wondering if those that have highlands have registered them with the American highland Cattle Association.

I have not registered mine but was thinking of doing so.

I have two registered adult Highland cows and an unregistered adult cow. I also have an unregistered bull calf and an unregistered heifer calf. We recently butchered three animals, two bulls and a steer, all unregistered. I don't really see a need at this point for registered animals because I'm simply selling them for beef or keeping them for the family's consumption.

We did have a nice couple come buy this summer and ask to buy a young bull that we had here. Instead of selling it to them, we traded for a Hereford heifer and a Highland steer. We offered to help them register the animal, since both of its parents are registered and they said that they'd like to do so, though they haven't contacted us since about registration.

The only real reason I would register an animal is if you are going to sell registered breeding animals.

I have just 3 highlands. Will be breeding when they are 24 months...which is in 5 months. The Sire of all three is Arkle the 2nd of Lost Nation (ET). He is a registered bull came straight from Scotland as I understand it.

I will not be butchering any of these three I will be breeding them. When reading the American highland Cattle Assoc. website it says that the original owner of the heifers will have to register them...unless I read that wrong. If so that is not a problem.

Guess I will be registering them.

Thanks for your answers.

The thing to keep in mind, if you are going to register an animal, you need to do it before 24 months of age. If you want to register a Highland that is over 24 months, you have to provide satisfactory proof of parentage to AHCA. This proof requires the DNA test of the individual to be registered and its sire and dam.

All bulls have to be DNA tested in order to be registered.

current prices for registering in 2009
Female Registrations
Cows up to 12 months of age… $25
Cows from 12 to 24 months of age… $45
Cows over 24 months of age… $85
Bull registrations
Bulls up to 24 months of age… $60
Bulls over 24 months of age… $180

All registrations, with the exception of transfers, not submitted on-line are subject to a $5 surcharge.
Transfers… $25.00
Transfers after 90 days of sale… $45
Transfer fees double if seller is a non-member when AHCA receives the application.
Duplicate Registrations… $10

DNA Typing… $40
