Terrible night on the farm. Sad Update

Sorry it has taken me so long to update. Been a little to down to come to the cow forum.

As of Monday morning we had Buttercup completely well. She was up and down on her own, she readily accepted the new Holstein bull calf we bought, walking around without being wobbly and appeared to be doing just great. We decided to keep her and the calf in a small area just to make sure she had her strength back before returning her to pasture. On Monday afternoon we had to go to deliver a trailer about 3 hours away. We checked on them made sure they had plenty of hay, water ect and started on our way. When we returned that evening she was laying down and had apparently fallen (we had a freak few hours of sleet while we were gone which is strange for NC) and broke her front leg. We got her moved to a good position and decided to call the vet in the morning. Unfortunately she again tried to stand in the night and fell with her head below her chest. Needless to say after all of this and with a broken front leg we had no choice but to put her down. My heart is broken . I miss my cow and I miss my fresh milk and butter. I never dreamed I would take loosing her so hard. Maybe it is because I am 7 months pregnant....

Anyway's now we have this calf we have to do something with. That will be another post.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers. It is greatly appreciated.

For those who sent PM's I will respond as soon as possible just feeling a little to down right now.

Rebecca

Oh Rebecca, I can't believe it To have got her so far then to lose her to a freak accident like that. You have my sympathy because a good house cow is worth their weight in gold and she sounds as though she was perfect for you.

Take care,
Ronnie

So sorry, and after all the hard work to get her well. Too sad. I know things will get better for you.

Where was it broken? At the "wrist", ankle? or higher?.. If its not on the major bone, you can sometimes fix it. I had a heifer break her leg, she was 18 months old or more. We did save her, she has since had 3 calves.

But again, it depends where the break is. and how much one is willing to spend. It cost me 1500.

So Sorry To Hear That, It Can Be Heartbreaking At Times With Cows. Maybe Name The Bull Calf Butterboy, Are You Going To Bottle Feed Him Now?

I don't even know you but it breaks my heart. People on this forum have at least one thing in common and that is that we love animals. We've had losses like that and only another farmer can truly relate. We are so sorry. I think you need to jump right back in. if you can't find a fiefer calf off the farm, maybe it is worth the try to get one at the sale barn (I know, only as a last resort). The two years will go so fast and you'll be forming a bond in the mean time. I remember when we got our two girls at a day old, I thought it would be forever before we ever got a drop of milk. Now they are so sweet and we enjoy them so much and have calves due Christmas.
