Looking for a 4-H dairy cow in Wyoming

My daughter would like to take a dairy cow in 4-H.

Unfortunately we are having a difficult time locating breeders or dairies in this region that have heifers or young cows to sell. The only breed we do not want is holstein, we are partial to Jersey, Brown Swiss, or possibly milking shorthorn.

What I am hoping to gain from coming on here is good sources. Websites, contact people, etc. We are willing to go as far as Eastern Nebraska, Western Utah/Idaho, Colorado, Kansas.

I would also appreciate help from anyone in this region giving me ideas on what prices at what ages I should expect. Honestly, I've done research, but any information is helpful, especially from someone who's been there, done that.

Many thanks in advance!

First, I don't think that you will find a dairy to sell you a young cow. You can ask but they are not going to part with their younger milkers but you might be able to get a calf if they have enough replacements. I would think that because you want it for 4H and to show that it would have to be registered and I think you'll have to pay at least $700 for a day old jersey heifer.

I found these on usjersey.com, use the directory. You might find others that you are willing to travel for. I only looked at the dairies that have over 50 head milking.

Rachel,

That's exactly what I've come across. If I look at dairies, they aren't selling anything worth keeping. Because we have almost no shows in this area, I'm not as concerned about getting a registered animal (although I certainly wouldn't mind one!), as getting a good quality animal that will last us.

I will definitely be contacting the sources you gave me, thank you! I'm hoping that perhaps I will find other 4-H families and or homesteaders that are not big breeders or big dairies that may be getting rid of extra animals or the kids have grown up and mom/dad don't want the chores.

Really, any contacts, classifieds, websites...they are all resources.

I know of somebody in Idaho that has a Jersey/Dexter cross for sale. She has it listed in the Auction Barn section of the Keeping a Family cow forum. Somebody else also listed one in WY that sounds very sweet.

We are thinking to sell one of our Registered Jersey milkers. We purchased her about 2 months ago, and she just isnt fitting into our setup. She needs a head staunchen for while she is being milked, I can explain via phone.
If I had to say-because of the amount of milk she produces (about 2.5 to 3 gallons a milking right now)-she wouldnt be super patient with someone that is just learning to milk, thus, she would be best suited with someone that already knows how. We machine milk, but she stands just fine when I hand milk her too. She hasnt kicked us once in the time we have had her, so thats a huge plus )
We had her tested prior to purchase for TB, Bruc, and Johnes.
We also cannot sell her till mid to end of November, but will take $ down to hold her ($300).
Serious inquiries only please- 719-683-8140
Thanks for your time,
Mary
