A new one on me.....

I just sold a bottle bull calf to a nice young man from the city who is going to pick him up on Sunday so the calf be in a wedding. He spoke excellent English, but kept breaking into a foreign language when he was talking to his friend....sounded possibly Russian??
Now I'm curious if this calf in the wedding is a tradition or just a gag?? I asked him and one of the people is going to raise it after the wedding and possibly buy another from us. Selling animals is never boring. Maybe I'll ask him about the reasons behind the calf being in the wedding on Sunday.

My bet is it's going to be eaten or even sacrificed at the wedding. There are some traditions that do that. Google it and see.

Probably a traditional part of a Hindu wedding:

Godan
Godan is a very common ritual where a calf is given away as alms to a Brahmin. Godan is regarded as a matter of gaining great return for your deed. It is one of the most sacred rites of the Hindus.

if he was caucasion, and spoke a forign launguage to someone else that was caucasion that sounded russion, there is no telling what it could be, i would like to hear them speak though to see if i can pick out what the launguage could be though lol, there are alot of dialects and country customs over there in the Russian/Ucrain area, but if one or both of them were "Less than White" it could very possibly be Hindu, or something else middle eastern but that wont sound russian,

They were both very caucasion, blond and all that. They way he talked the calf will be *in* the wedding and not as a dish.....but I will ask him in about an hour.

Well, he picked the calf up today and I asked him to be sure what it was for. He said someone in the community/family was going to raise the calf to selling age and the proceeds would go to the bride and groom. So there we go!
I asked him to take a different calf than the one he had picked out on Wednesday. That one was very "off" this morning and I'd had to tube him. Gave him Bose, Vitamin B and he seemed fine tonight....but I wasn't comfortable selling him till I was sure.
So he took the alternate calf. He asked if it would jump out of the back of his truck.... I said "yep"!
So he went home in the extended part of a nice extended cab truck. Thankfully they only had 20-30 minutes drive.

I think thats a wonderful idea, a very thoughtful gift
Emily time for a dumb question, I know I ask lots of them. What do ya mean by off and having to tube the calf? I'm glad he is doing better now. I wonder it the truck was a mess by the time he got the calf home Thanks for updating us

Hey, no questions are dumb. By "off" I mean when I went out to feed this morning he just laid there. Didn't want to eat, his nose was dry and warm(bad sign in a cow), had no spunk at all and wouldn't stand. Checked him, he was not constipated, did not have scours, did not have pnuemonia. So nothing that I could put a finger on, but certainly NOT right.
Since he didn't have scours but he didn't want to eat, I went ahead and used a tube-feeder to feed him his breakfast of warm curdled milk. Gave him a shot of vitamin B to boost his appetite and perk him up, Bo-Se because I feel sure this herd is selenium deficient. Whatever was wrong, he looked and acted 99% better tonight. Almost as perky as everyone else, wet/cool nose, up and about, ate supper milk like a pro.
We'll see how he is in the morning.

I see, thanks for filling me in on what ya meant, I have a lot to learn about cattle I thought maybe you meant he wasn't very active and not behaving like usual but wasn't for sure. I'm glad he has improved so much from this morning. It says a lot about you Emily that you sold one of the other calves to the guy instead of this one

Well, I was the clueless buyer years ago and I *did* get sold four sick heifers that died the next day(found out they had never had colostrum). I'm certainly not going to do that to someone else.
And really, when your in the business of selling animals, selling them healthy is in your own best interest in the long run.....word gets around who has healthy calves and who doesn't......

Emily clueless Wow sorry ya lost all the calves back then. Anyone thats knows you knows that you would only sell them healthy animals. Good point, if you sell quality and healthy animals word will get around and if ya don't that will get around also.
