Curly Calf Syndrome

I was listening to a farm show yesterday and they were talking about how this one bull may have had this genetic trait which when breed to a cow with that same gene has had calves born with a disformed spines killing them. Has anyone else heard about this?

I had this emailed to me from AAA, and it is scary. There are ALOT of Percision influenced herds out there.

I will credit the assoc with getting word out rather than some cover story.

Yes kudos to the assoc for letting others know. They talked about a little on the farm show how important genetic diversity is and how in some parts of the cattle industry like in the seed industry there are becoming to few varieties with seeds. With cattle it would be reling on a selected number of sires or dams.

The Swiss Village Foundation is working to guard against this in rare breeds. They collect genetic material from old lines and store it against the possibility of a breeding disaster. My Dexter bull Brenn has semen in the vault.

Maybe someone should start a similar effort for our commercial cattle.
