How now loud brown cow?

Are your cows loud?

Our Jersey is a bawler. Sometimes, I think she's in heat because she is just so dang loud.

Right now, she's being quiet but if I went outside, she would start up and keep mooing for several minutes after I return to the house. She is in a field with two horses so she's not alone.

I had her bred a few weeks back and was convinced that she was not pregnant because she bawled all night a few weeks later. Whow knows.

Is your cow loud? If so, when and how often?

My daughter's milking shorthorn absolutely adores her. I know exactly where my daughter is by the direction of the bawling cow...... Salena milks her and Red seems to think that Sis is her calf..... It is hysterical to see the cow try to "clean up the baby". Nothing quite like a rough, slobbery cow tongue to wake you up in the morning. Up until last week, Red was raising two calves but it was past time to wean them. She was affectionate before the boys went to the sale barn but now she is waaaaay over the top.

Our were both silent for the first few months we had them. Never heard them moo once. But now, they are at the fence mooing at the house every morning wanting their grain. Even after they finish it, they will stand their and moo at the house for another hour begging for more. If we are late taking it out there, they will work their way up the fence mooing and go into the front pasture to where they are mooing directly at the front of the house. We like it. But, only have two.

Our Jerseys only bawl if we are extremely late for milking, at calving and weaning time.
We have a small herd though(6 cows and 1 horse), rather than an individual cow or two. Having a "herd" makes a big difference in how loud they are in my experience.

Yep, Violet is much more like this. She adores me and hollers everytime I step out of the house.

Makes it hard to know when she's actually in distress or heat.

Yes. All the time She yells to say hi, she yells if I'm late with the hay, she answers when she's called (I'd just as soon she came quietly, but she seems to prefer a dialogue) It's a horrible sound too, like she's in pain and she's only got the one volume, whether she's just chatty or really upset. Neither of the other two hardly say a word (unless the hay is late, of course). If she wasn't so perfect otherwise, she'd be burger.

We have a little holstien heffier who is about 8 or 9 months old. We've had her since mid July.
She rarely makes a sound... she has a little low moo, and isn't very vocal. Always alert and curious, watching form the edge of the fence, just dosen't talk much.
When remnants of Hanna came through a couple of weeks ago, a dead tree fell on her fence. I was outside and head her little moos. Then I heard a BIG MOO. She was standing over by the fallen tree, looking at it and then looking at me as if to say "Lady, do you see this!?"
I wonder if her moo will grow as she grows?

Shelly

We have 2 young Jerseys and a Holstein .They aren't very old, the Jerseys were born in June and the Holstein in Jan. They hardly make a sound....I wish sometimes they would moo so I could make sure they haven't gotten out.

We have a couple of our Scottish Highland cows that, when you go outside and they see you...they will start bawling to beat the band. I think it is bovine for "starving cows here, where's the grub! FEED ME!" even though to look at them you can tell NONE of them ever miss a meal!

Turn it down!

I was tickled to read the responses, because my cows make an AWFUL racket every time they see me. It's gotten so bad that I sneak around so they won't see me. If they do, they'll bawl for 5-10 minutes with the volume turned WAY up. They don't do it to my husband or anybody else. And they're not out of food either, they're in pasture with grass galore and they're bred. Is there anything that you can do to make them shut up? Other than the hamburger option, of course.

our new Jersey is loud like that and to top it off she sounds like Helga the foghorn... there is nothing sweet, feminine or dainty about the ole Haus' mooing.... everytime I hear her mooing a picture of a lighthouse comes to mind and I look for the rocks
