Lupines in the hay?

We have a person up the street that we buy hay from sometimes.
He came by and said he has two bales (these are smaller round bales) that he will give us (for free). The reason being (he says) is that it a has a lot of lupine in it, it has gone to seed and he doesn't want it spreading around his barn.

I know that large amounts of certain lupines is supposed to be poisonous but we are up in the north east (maine). The cows we would being feeding are family milk cows. We drink the raw milk.

Is this safe to feed?

Thanks
Mike

We made hay on some rented fields that had an infestation of Lupines around the edges.
I cannot say if Lupines are safe, but our experience was that the cattle sorted the materials, ate the good hay and left the Lupines uneaten. We had no problems resulting.

In the late 80's, lupines were being planted as a high protein substitute for soy. We planted 7 acres, had a massive drought, and harvested nothing. I don't recall roasting them being an issue, as we don't have any processors in the area, and we had a small dairy farm, so I believe we planned to feed them raw in the grain mix. The type of lupine must makes the difference?

Each lupine is different. But from my research the foliage is good high protein while the seeds are toxic. I'm not sure what I'd do, probably not use it though. Free mulch?
