Piedmontese cattle

Hi all

Just was talking with some cattle breeders at the county fair. Some of them were telling me about the piedmontese breed. They are crossing them with there commerical cattle for better growth rates.
I saw some on a website. Very nice. I was raised by my grandfather and he believed in purebred reg. stock. Does anyone know of any piedmontese farms in the central NY area? I am near Utica and Syracuse. Thanks for the info.

I raised Piedmontese/Charolais for our own use. I ordered some AI straws from a Canadian bull and crossed with purebred Charolais cows. I was not impressed. If you really want ultra-lean, they are great for that, but we've had a couple tough and tasteless ones. The last one took a long time to mature, and didn't finish well, but then again we've never used a feedlot (although we used to give some grain), and this last one was grass finished. Our pure Charolais calves tasted a lot better, and finished better.

We no longer want ultra-lean cattle now that we switched to grass-fed, becausethe fat is actually more healthful now, and I am presently crossing my cows with a low line angus for a smaller frame. I have two heifers like that, and they are awesome. They should have better heat tolerance than Angus (we are in SC now, used to live in PA)
