banding bottle calf

Do you think it would be ok to band a couple of calves? They are 9 weeks old getting ready to turn them out in the pasture and it would be nice to have it done before I turn them out. What do you all think?

You bet I would have done it even at 6 weeks as long as both were easy to get a hold of them and into the bander.

Its more than okay. Could've been done when they were a few days old IMHO.

Yep but should have been done when a couple of days old. If useing bands give the bull calf a shot of pen to keep down any chance of infection from the slow process of sack rotting off. I perfer a case knife takes 15 secs and its a done , not 2 -3 weeks of rotting off

Yes, do them now before they get any older. I always say I'm going to do them not long after birth but it never happens and they are usually done at around weaning time, which as bottle fed calves, is approximately 3 months of age. Too much longer, it becomes a vet job but at 9 weeks they are still small enough to fit through the elastrator. I don't do it when they are wet and nor do I give anitibiotics because it's a waste of time. By the time any infection shows up, if it does, the anitbiotics have long gone from the body and won't do one iota of good. However, it you band in dry weather and they are on clean pasture there is no reason to expect infection. However, good animal husbandry should be practiced and the calves check periodically to ensure that all is well.

Greg, cutting is rarely done here now and probably for good reason - I've seen more problems with calves that have been cut than I ever have with calves that have been rung. The worst was flystrike and by the time the owner found it, it was too late and the calf had to be shot. It is not a pretty sight to see a calf with it's guts crawling with maggots.

Cheers,
Ronnie

Go ahead - just be sure to vaccinate against tetanus at the same time.

went ahead and done it. I was just worried about flies. Don't usually keep calves in the summer but wound up with a couple this year. Thanks to all for the info.

I agree its not a good site to see. I have cut 1000's of bull's worked in a feedlot. I can say for a fact that I have only done a bad job cutting bulls , less than a dozen times in 38 yrs of raising cattle. I prefer the knife becouse you know when you let it up its a steer
